The pandemic has had a devastating impact on Nepal’s overall service and development sectors, especially education. In particular, the education sector faces immediate and potentially significant long-term impacts of the pandemic, with especially severe consequences for early- and primary-level education across the country. Children from marginalized communities are also disproportionately affected by the closure of schools with increasing difficulty in accessing reading material as well as instruction.

The project objective was to support families and communities of early grade and pre-primary students with supplementary educational material, guidance, and early literacy best-practices while children are not able to attend in-person educational instruction. The intervention aimed for children, families, and communities including from marginalized groups to have access to alternative reading and learning materials that are adaptable and appropriate for remote and or in-person learning.

What it does/ How it functions

  • Production and distribution of alternative learning and reading materials, especially designed for marginalized, vulnerable, and disadvantaged households.

  • Conduct outreach campaigns through social media channels and radio to inform families and communities of the availability of the reading and audio materials.

  • Empower teachers from project locations to support alternative learning and reading for children and households in their community

The main challenge in this program is not being able to provide adequate materials in all the schools as well as students.
